Beaches in Bicheno Tasmania

Our Bicheno farm manager, Dean, talks about the local lifestyles on the beautiful island of Tasmania - where days can be as active or as laid-back as you please with fishing, surfing and traditional Australian barbecues to enjoy.

Bicheno is a town of the beautiful east coast of Tasmania and famous for fairy penguins and sandy beaches. I like going to Redbill Beach and Waubs Beach. Both are within the town boundary and easy to walk to.

Redbill Beach has more of a reputation for surf when the swell is right. My kids have learnt to surf here and is great for the younger ones with their boogie boards. For us it is only 300m from our home so easy walking distance. Australia Day is a great day for us if weather permitting to go to Redbill with a portable BBQ, food, drink, cricket bats and balls, all our boards and plenty of sunscreen. We would spend the day there with family and friends.

Waubs Beach is a bit more sheltered and great for young families. Bicheno fishing boats moor in the bay and the local junior surf lifesavers train there in the summer. There is regular dive training off the break water and fishermen off the rocks. When weather is permitting and the water is still, we would use our flounder lights and spear a feed. Occasionally I have pulled a small boat around with 4 excitable kids in the dark, with the exception of 4 torches shinning everywhere.
